Juhi Chawla flattered by Lata Mangeshkar
The undisputed queen of melody Lata Mangeshkar held a big concert on 9 March 1997 in Mumbai. From Nimmi to Geeta Bali, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit to Manisha Koirala the Melody Queen paid a rich tribute by singing a medley for all the leading heroines of the last decades. Surprisingly Lata Mangeshkar neglected to sing for Bollywood leading star and former Miss India Juhi Chawla. How can that be possible? Juhi Chawla was at her peak in the 90’s and not to forget the super hits songs Lata Mangeshkar sung for her in the movie Darr which was released in 1993. There were thousands of questions. Was Juhi not good enough? Didn't the songs Lata Mangeshkar sung for her fit in the medley? If so, she is the Melody Queen and could have done something. Poor Juhi who is a big fan of Lata Mangeshkar was not included in the list of Bollywood super stars. While Lata Mangeshkar has rendered many songs for Juhi Chawla of which some became blockbusters.
Juhi Chawla started her career as an actress in 1986 with the movie Saltanat. A year later she was to shine in a Kannada spoken movie Premaloka. After her appearance with Amir Khan in Qayamat se Qayamat Tak in 1988, Juhi Chawla never had to look back. The movie became famous and its songs became chartbusters of the year.
Still there was something missing in her performances and that was the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The moment Lata Mangeshkar sings for an actress the actress herself feels complete. It took 6 long years before Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice to Juhi Chawla which was for the movie Radha ka Sangam. Lata Mangeshkar sung the following three super hit duets which where all
beautifully picturised on Juhi Chawla. The songs are: O radha tere bina with Shabbir Kumar -
Bicchua more sajan ka with Suresh Wadkar & Do bol kehke hum to with Kirti Kumar
In the same year Lata Mangeshkar lent her golden voice twice for Juhi in the movie Bewafa se Wafa with two heartrending solos Hum jaisa kahin aap ko dilbar na milega & Ye dil bewafa se wafa kar raha hai. Lata Mangeshkar sung another heart-breaking solo Babul chodi na jaye haye teri galiyan in the same movie for Juhi Chawla which was picturised in the background during a wedding scene. And who can forget the two evergreen duets O lootere o lootere with Manhar Udhas & Ae sawan baras zara with Suresh Wadkar of the movie Lootere in 1993.
Juhi Chawla was and still is tremendously popular. Her face was to be seen everywhere. That also made her get the leading role in the movie Aaina. Just when rumours where spreading everywhere that Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar was taking it slow and working on her retirement, she embellished Juhi Chawla in the movie Aaina 1993 with
these three mind-blowing duets: Aaina hai mera chehra with Asha Bhosle & Suresh Wadkar - Dil ne dil se kya kaha with Nitin Mukesh & Goriya re goriya with Jolly Mukherjee.
What could Juhi Chawla wish for more? It was a dream come true. She became a household name. Producers, co-stars, etc., everyone wanted to work with her. And above all the Melody Queen was singing for her.
A year later in 1994 Yash Chopra offered her the leading role in the movie Darr. Who can refuse Yash Chopra? But what a great choice Juhi Chawla took to accept her role in Darr. Yash Chopra means Lata Mangeshkar. And yes, Lata Mangeshkar was not recording that much anymore. But there was no question that Lata Mangeshkar wouldn’t sing for Darr. Another lucky happening was that the composers of Darr were Shiv Kumar Sharma & Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia. Both preferred their one and the only favourite singer
Lata Mangeshkar. Lata Mangeshkar didn’t hold back a second and stole the heart of the whole nation again with these 5 immensely popular duets: Meri maa ne laga di hai with Kavita Krishnamurthy & Pamela Chopra - Likha hai yh in hawaon men with Hariharan -
Too mere saamne main tere with Udit Narayan - Ishq da rog buda with Vinod Rathod & Chhota sa ghar hai yeh with Abhjijeet.
All the songs were picturised on Juhi Chawla except for Ishq da rog which was shelved from the movie. With her goody giggly soft and typical role of Indian women Juhi became a role model for millions. Unfortunately she didn't get the movie in which Lata Mangeshkar was singing. But luck didn't leave her side. She was still going strong, and finally in 2001 Lata Mangeshkar got to sing for her again in the movie One 2 ka 4. Composed by A R Rahman Lata Mangeshkar sung the duet Khamoshiyan gunguna lagi with Sonu Nigam.
Lata Mangeshkar proved that Bollywood film music is her domain. No matter how long she keeps away. The moment she comes back, it's all her again.
It moved Juhi Chawla to tears when her idol Lata Mangeshkar complimented her during a casual conversation. Lata Mangeshkar told her that she is one of her favourite actress. Juhi is walking with her head in the clouds. She was restless to share this with the world. No matter how many award she got, or recognition, Juhi Chawla considered a compliment of Lata Mangeshkar as the most divine blessing.
The now 44 years old, Juhi Chawla didn't waste any time to twitter her feelings: 'Lataji is my idol...Whenever she playbacked a song and I enacted it...I felt so blessed!! Told her that myself. But am so thrilled. Can't believe she said what she did to me...I can't stop smiling...It's the beeesssttt compliment eeevvveerrr !!! Thank you Lataji,'
